San Leopoldo I.G.T
Harvest
In October, the grapes are harvested by hand and then selected in the cellar on a belt with an optical selector.
Sizes
0.75L | 1.5L | 3LSan Leopoldo Merlot is produced from selected grapes harvested by hand, then vinified through a temperature-controlled fermentation of 20 days in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts.
This is followed by a long period of ageing in oak barriques and then refinement in the bottle.
Vinification
Vinification in temperature-controlled 50 and 70 hectolitre tanks, using the 'submerged cap' method, followed by malolactic fermentation always in stainless steel and at controlled temperatures. Ageing in American oak tonneaux and barriques followed by 6 months of refinement in the bottle.Soil
Geologically, the soils belong to the Cretaceous (a very ancient geological formation) characterised by clay and fine, marly limestone, often interspersed with each other. These soils, often referred to as "galestri", have a good texture, with skeleton, which allows good drainage and excellent development of the root system, together with other more clayey-sandy soils that have pebbles as skeleton. Both types give different results on the wines but in any case have an optimum effect on the quality of the wine.Vineyard
Was planted in 2013, with a planting pattern of cm270x100 with 3700 vines per hectare. Double upside-down training system (modified guyot). Altitude 340 metres above sea level.Exposure
With a north-south exposure due to the slope of the land, the vineyard is situated on the slopes of Monte Amiata, overlooking the Maremma, with a significant night/day temperature range and ventilation that keeps the grapes healthy and an average rainfall that helps bring the grapes to optimal ripeness without incurring water stress.Awards
